A crisp, late-winter morning greeted specially invited guests, including several media, at the launch party for Dragon in Ancona, Italy today. The 261-foot (79.5-meter) megayacht received a blessing from a priest before a powerhouse performance by a violinist. A few minutes after her rendition of the anthemic “We Are the Champions,” a shower of confetti and streamers heralded Dragon‘s first taste of salt water.

Her length makes her Columbus Yachts’ largest launch to date. “To date” is all the more notable, since the brand is relatively young, too. It is particularly young for an industry where some shipyards date back more than a century. Specifically, In 2011, Giuseppe Palumbo, head of the shipbuilding company Palumbo Group, decided to expand into megayachts. The owner of Dragon signed his contract five years later.

At a volume approaching 2,300 gross tons, the yacht encompasses six decks. One of those, in fact, is solely for the owner to use. Five guest staterooms—what Columbus Yachts terms “maxi guest cabins—await friends and family on the main deck. The owner planned several special features for relaxation, including a spa and wellness area on the fourth deck. A 26-foot-long (8-meter-long) swimming pool awaits on the sundeck, additionally fitted with contra-flow jets. Waterside, meanwhile, Dragon has quite a large beach club. Specifically, it measures 2,153 square feet (200 square meters).

Dragon, with naval architecture by Hydro Tec and interior design by Francesco Guida, makes her global boat-show premiere at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.
